You are among a small group of kindreds invited to join master percussionist, composer, griot lineage holder and world music performer Aba Diop in a two-week journey into the heart of West African Sufism: The Baye Fall of Senegal.

The Baye Fall are a non-proselytizing sect of mystical Sufism founded in the 19th century in response to French colonial hegemony and have become a sustainable model for the world to understand how devotion and communal work as a spiritual practice can preserve indigenous lifeways in the face of extreme adversity.

While this is an open and welcome tradition, the Baye Fall are intimately connected to the lands, its spirits, and the djinn of Senegambia. The songs, rhythms, and prayers shared in this course are laden with context: the spiritual ecology of the Sahel bioregion and its people whose sacred sites included trees, rivers, wells, and grottoes. Oral tradition and somatic experience are foundational to Baye Fall Sufism.

With all of the above in mind, this wisdom-share is born of the innate generosity of the Baye Fall tradition as a bridge for those who wish to cross into a life more closely touched by spiritual practice, service to others, and resiliency.

This course is invite-only and will open with a kickoff live call gathering on 3/15 at 5pm PT / 8pm ET with Aba where students can ask questions (they will be translated by his wife) and the Dara [classroom] will open on March 15th during the holy month of Ramadan. The course is self-study and will close with another community gathering call on March 29th at 5pm PT / 8pm ET.
